DIU Signs Landmark Solar Power Agreement to Transform Campus Energy Use

Dhaka, 6 April 2026 — Daffodil International University (DIU) has taken a major step toward sustainable energy by signing a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to implement a large-scale solar power project on its campus.

The PPA Signing Ceremony, held on April 6, marks a significant milestone in DIU’s journey toward becoming a renewable-energy-powered university. Under this initiative, the university has launched a 3.4-megawatt solar power project based on an OPEX (Operational Expenditure) model, aiming to transition the entire campus and residential halls to solar electricity within the next four months.

The solar system will substantially reduce the university’s reliance on conventional grid electricity while ensuring a clean, reliable, and sustainable energy supply for academic facilities and student residences.

One of the key advantages of the project is its zero upfront investment requirement for the university. Through the OPEX model, DIU will purchase solar electricity at a fixed rate of 7 BDT per unit, ensuring both financial sustainability and environmental benefits over the long term.

The project will utilize advanced L-type bifacial solar panels, a new generation technology capable of producing electricity from both sides of the panel. This feature significantly increases efficiency and maximizes power generation from limited installation space.

According to project officials, the innovative model was initially developed and demonstrated at DIU, and it is now being considered for national expansion across the higher education sector.

In the next phase, the initiative is expected to move into a tender process involving 32 public universities across Bangladesh. The expansion aims to build a combined solar generation capacity of around 60 megawatts, enabling participating universities to meet approximately 20% of their total electricity demand through solar energy systems.

Experts say the initiative could serve as a national model for clean energy adoption in higher education, strengthening energy independence while supporting climate-resilient infrastructure across university campuses.

With this step, DIU positions itself at the forefront of sustainable campus development, demonstrating how educational institutions can play a leading role in advancing renewable energy and environmental responsibility in Bangladesh.
